Luxurious Bliss at Bareiss

After leaving Europa Park we headed to Bareiss for two nights for some rest and relaxation. By now my cold had completely set in, so was so looking forward to not doing much for a couple of days.

Black Forest Gateau - yum!
We got to Bareiss just in time for afternoon cakes. It seems to be something of a tradition in this part of Germany, as from 2 - 5pm all the cafes and restaurants are filled with people eating cake and ice cream, and drinking various coffees and teas. Being in the Black Forest we had to have the Black Forest Gateau. It was pretty damn good! Layers of choc sponge, soaked in some sort of alcohol, with plenty of cherries and cream between. Delicious! We washed ours down with a glass of Champagne rather than the tea and coffee. There's only so far you can follow tradition!

We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool. Unfortunately the weather was a bit crap, so we didn't get to swim in the outside lake they had created. Meant more relaxing for me though! And of course, we had the bottle of bubbles to while away the afternoon with. Perfect!

Dinner that night was at the Restaurant Bareiss, which has 3 Michellin stars. It was amazing, and deserves it's own separate post.

This little guy thought the camera was more corn...
not the brightest, but super cute!
The next morning is was pretty overcast. We had an incredible breakfast (every type of cheese and cold meat you could imagine, freshly cooked eggs, fruits, pretty much imagine it and it is available), then went for a walk through the black forest despite the weather, and I'm so glad we did! It was beautiful! A little hard being so blocked up and not being able to breathe much, but having lunch at the Sattelei Hiking Hut at the top (with more bubbles of course) was worth it! Also the little deer we found in the wildlife park on the way were super cute. There was a machine dispensing corn to feed them with, and they all came running as soon as we touched it. There was only one who was brave enough to eat out of my hand though.

Back down the mountain for more cake, followed by a wine tasting we had booked ourselves in for. It was a really good, but also somewhat strange experience, given the other three attending were German, so the poor guy had to say everything in German, and then translate for us. We really enjoyed it, even though I think we missed a lot as I'm sure he didn't translate everything, and of course we couldn't understand any of the others questions. They were all very friendly, and made us feel quite welcome though. We got to taste some outstanding wines, and some graps I hadn't heard of before. The couple there turned out to also be winemakers from North Germany, and had two of their wines for us to taste as well, which were fantastic. Pretty awesome to be sitting around a table in a luxury hotel in a tiny town in the middle of Germany tasting amazing wines that would be impossible to find with the actual wine makers!

We went to the more relaxed restaurant for dinner that night, and found it was still pretty full on, with loads of courses. Again the food was great, but we were so stuffed!

In the morning we got up for yet another massive breakfast then more time by the pool to relax and swim, before heading to Schiltach.

Overall it was a fantastic experience, and so glad we did it. The food was amazing, the wines even better, we got to explore a bit of the Black Forest, and I got in some relaxing. The staff were so helpful, nice and funny too. I can't wait until we can go back one day!

This post was started in Baden Baden, but due to a flaky internet connection, and being too sleepy on the train, it wasn't completed until we made it to Paris and checked into our hotel room.
